Pets living together
Cold blooded vs. warm blooded?
Although the question is a bit over-dramatised in the title, this is no coincidence…
We see a lot of “dog/cat+lizard love each other” type pictures popping up on social media. We don’t want to judge, we just think it’s important to say how unpredictable these situations are.
Why do we think so?
Yes, we know you love your cat or dog, and we know that little furballs would never hurt anyone!
We’re just asking you to think for a moment that as lovely as they are, they’re still animals. And they’re real hunters! And their instincts are strong and can kick in at any time!
Monitor lizards are very fast, explosive animals. It will run from anything it perceives as a potential predator. A careless movement, an unusual noise and they’re off and running.
This can be a problem for several reasons:
Firstly, since your little lizard does not reside in its enclosure, it can disappear anywhere in an instant! You may not find it and it could be damaged or destroyed in the house…
Secondly, the size and movement of your monitor lizard makes it a potential prey animal in the eyes of your furry friend! It triggers the hunting instinct and trouble is brewing!
If you take a word of advice:
No matter how cool it is, you put your tree monitor on your dog’s head! No matter how many likes you get when you post your sleeping cat with your monitor lizard!
The safety of your little friends is more important than anything else, take care of them!
Take time for everyone, take care of everyone, but don’t let them “play” together! Carefully close the door to your reptile room and always make sure the enclosure is closed!
If you do your best, your animals will be together without a problem!
